My Breastfeeding Journey

Hello girls! A new week, a new blog, you know that I love sharing with you! If you have been following my stories, you will know that I have completely weaned Mia. It is the end of a beautiful, super emotional and connected stage but it gives way to new stages, moments and experiences.

I have received questions in relation to the subject and I know that, in general, this is a very common and “feared” topic in motherhood. Today I want to tell you about my experience, how it was for me, what I did and what I did not do so that we understand that there are no perfect techniques or a single “correct” way of doing things, each child and each family is unique so we just have to find the technique that works for us.

I breastfed Mia for 21 months and, initially, my goal was to breastfeed until she was 24 months (two years). But I felt like my body was ready for weaning and, more importantly, that Mia was even smarter than I was. Her feeds had been greatly reduced, in fact her night feeds had ended since she was six months old because she adapted very well to solid food and at night she did not need to supplement. If you see me on Instagram every day, you know that Mia loves to eat (I’m not exaggerating!) So on that side it was perfect for us.

This allowed me to adjust the times I would feed her at six months and reduce the night feedings as well . Also, I realized that with the night feeds neither she nor I got a good rest so eliminating them was very beneficial, a technique that was definitely great in our case.

I breastfed on demand until she was 19 months old and, after that, weaning was gradual, quite progressive. As planned, this allowed me to reduce the feeding times little by little, respecting her time and mine. If she did not ask me for milk, I would not offer it to her and, also, I tried to lengthen the time that passed without taking any milk, I sought to distract her if I could, offer her solid food, play with her, whenever possible, of course.

Also, I realized that if I woke up before her every morning, got ready and was ready when she opened her eyes, everything was easier. So I had her breakfast prepared (or almost), she would eat breakfast instead of having breast milk which was basically the only time she was having it.. As I told you before, I relied a lot on her good eating and on the fact that she likes solid food to be able to make weaning more pleasant.

I remember that she had made the decision to wean her on a specific day, that morning she asked me for a breast, I gave it to her and after that she did not ask for it again. That has been the case since that day!

Undoubtedly breastfeeding is a very beautiful stage, I loved it and I would repeat it a hundred times more. I do not regret any decision, Mia never drank milk from a bottle and, despite the fact that breastfeeding on demand is very demanding, I liked the experience and I think that, when the time comes to repeat it, I would not change anything that I did now.

I wanted to do this blog to remind you that, in motherhood (and in life), not everything is black and white, this was one of the most valuable lessons that breastfeeding left me. Many times as new moms we have high expectations and this is fine, but the most important thing is to do what makes us happy while it makes us happy and stop doing it when it no longer does. Don’t judge us. Stop when we feel like we have to stop. Listen to our intuition, our body, they know!

All the moments and memories that my breastfeeding stage leaves me are inexplicable, as is the connection I felt with Mia. There are no words to explain it, and I know you understand it because I am sure you must have felt it too. I will always remember them with great joy and, of course, some nostalgia (what mom doesn’t get nostalgic when talking about her baby ?!).

Today, after Mia is weaned, we have found other ways to connect and express love. In addition, she is already older and she knows how to show affection in many ways. So, in conclusion: enjoy each stage, each moment, these pass very quickly. Take advantage of your baby every second of every day, don’t judge yourself so much, be kind to yourself. Motherhood is too beautiful not to enjoy it.

Thank you, as always, for reading this far and for joining me every day. A huge hug!

Mariana.

¡Holaaa chicas!

No juzgarnos.

Mariana.
